Things to Do in Canggu
Canggu is surf, coffee, yoga, shopping and sunsets, all within a few kilometres. Here is how we would spend one perfect day here, hour by hour, with the practical bits you need for each stop.

One perfect day in Canggu
6.30am: Surf lesson at Batu Bolong
Batu Bolong is Canggu's learner beach, with soft waves that break left and right. Early morning is the quietest time in the water, roughly 6.30am to 8am. Most surf schools on the beach run lessons of around 90 minutes, and a soft-top board costs about Rp 100,000 to 150,000 a day if you already know what you are doing. 8.30am: Breakfast at The Avocado Factory
Yes, this is us. We open at 7am and serve breakfast until 11.30am on Jl. Pantai Batu Mejan, the road down to Echo Beach. After a surf, the Avo Steak & Eggs (Rp 205k) or the Classic Benedict (Rp 85k) will sort you out. Lighter: the vegan Acai Smoothie Bowl (Rp 90k). 10am: Watch the surfers at Echo Beach
Walk down to Echo Beach (Pantai Batu Mejan) and watch the advanced surfers on the fast left-hand reef break. It works best around mid to high tide. Swimming is not great here because of the reef and rips. Our Echo Beach guide has the details.
11.30am: Slow yoga at The Practice
The Practice on Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong is a bamboo studio with an open shala over the rice fields. It focuses on traditional, slow Hatha rather than fast flow, with Yin, meditation and beginners' classes too. The schedule rotates, so check their website before you go.
1pm: Shopping at Love Anchor
Love Anchor on Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong is a cluster of boutiques and a bazaar selling linen clothes, swimwear, rattan bags, jewellery and homewares. It is open roughly 8am to 10pm and gets busiest at weekends, so go earlier in the day if you hate crowds.
2.30pm: A coffee crawl
Canggu takes its coffee seriously. Try Blacklist Coffee Roasters on Jl. Tanah Barak or Kawisari on Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong, which serves coffee from its own East Java plantation. Our best coffee in Canggu guide has eight more.
4pm: Sunset at Tanah Lot (or stay local)
Tanah Lot, the famous sea temple, is about 30 minutes' drive from Canggu. Entry for foreign adults is Rp 75,000 (Rp 40,000 for children), plus a small parking fee. At low tide you can walk closer to the base of the temple; at high tide the rock becomes an island. It gets very busy at sunset, so leave early.
Prefer to stay close? Batu Bolong faces west and the whole town turns up for sunset from about 5pm.
7.30pm: Dinner back on Batu Mejan
We are open until 11pm (kitchen last orders 10.30pm), with a lunch and dinner menu of burgers, birria tacos, Korean brisket and the vegan Poke Bowl. A good place to end the day a short walk from the beach.
Tips for getting around
- Scooter or ride-hailing: most people use a scooter or a ride-hailing app. Traffic around Canggu is heavy at peak times.
- Walk the beach: you can walk along the sand between Echo Beach and Batu Bolong.
- Respect the temples: both beaches have temples. Do not step on offerings and dress modestly near them.
- Rainy season: from about November to March, plan for afternoon storms and keep an indoor option.
Our honest take
The best Canggu days are the slow ones: an early surf, a long breakfast, a nap, and sunset with your feet in the sand. Do not try to do everything at once.
