Echo Beach, Canggu
Echo Beach is at the end of our road, and it is the beach our guests ask us about most. Here is what you should know before you go: the surf, the sunset, the swimming, the parking and where to eat.
Short answer
Echo Beach (local name Pantai Batu Mejan) is a black volcanic sand beach at the end of Jl. Pantai Batu Mejan in Canggu, Bali. It is known for a fast left-hand reef break for intermediate and advanced surfers, best at mid to high tide, and for sunsets over the Indian Ocean. Surfing at Echo Beach
Echo Beach is a left-hand reef break over a sand and rock bottom. It is fast and punchy, which is why you will see so many good surfers here. Local surf guides rate it intermediate to expert, and suggest intermediates only paddle out when it is head-high or smaller.
- Tide: mid to high. It tends to close out at low tide.
- Swell and wind: south to south-west swell with light easterly winds or no wind.
- Hazards: shallow reef, rocks near the stairs and sea wall, rip currents, and dirty water after heavy rain.
- Beginners: learn at Batu Bolong just down the coast, where the waves are much friendlier, then come back to watch Echo.
Sunset at Echo Beach
Canggu faces the Indian Ocean, so the sun sets over the water. Echo Beach gets busy from late afternoon as people come to watch the last surfers of the day. Grab a spot on the sand or the sea wall about an hour before sunset. Bring a sarong or towel, because the black sand holds the heat.
Can you swim at Echo Beach?
We would not recommend it for a casual swim. The break sits over a shallow reef, there are rocks by the stairs, and rip currents are common along this stretch of coast. If you want to get in the water, take a surf lesson, swim only where lifeguards are on duty, and never swim alone or after drinking.
The temple and local etiquette
The beach takes its local name from the Batu Mejan temple on the sand. When there is a ceremony, give it space, do not walk through offerings, and cover up if you are close to the temple. It is a working holy site, not a backdrop.
Getting there and parking
Echo Beach is at the end of Jl. Pantai Batu Mejan in Canggu. From the airport it is roughly an hour by car, often more in traffic. Most people arrive by scooter or ride-hailing car. Parking near the beach is limited and fills up at sunset, so arrive early or get dropped off. You can walk along the beach towards Batu Bolong if you want to explore the coast.
Where to eat near Echo Beach
This is the part we know best.
- The Avocado Factory (that is us, on Jl. Pantai Batu Mejan). Open 7am to 11pm. Breakfast runs 7am to 11.30am: try the Classic Benedict (Rp 85k) or the Acai Smoothie Bowl (Rp 90k) after a surf. Later, the lunch and dinner menu has the Double Cheese Burger Avo (Rp 160k), Avo Birria Tacos (Rp 120k) and a vegan Poke Bowl (Rp 80k). Gluten-free options are available, but our kitchen is shared, so they are not suitable for coeliacs.
- Sensorium, also on Jl. Pantai Batu Mejan, is a fusion cafe and restaurant run by head chef William Salim.
- COMO Beach Club sits across from the Batu Mejan temple if you want a sunset drink by the water.
